Project Celica
Step 4: Unleashing the Horsepower

8.25.10

With little more than 100 stock horsepower, we need to drag every last pony out of this car.  There are several things that can make a car go faster, but we can only go with the cheapest.  Freeing up the intake and exhaust can go a long way for increasing horsepower.  After sorting through Advance Auto Part's exhaust pipe bin, we found several pieces from which we created our own straight-pipe exhaust for the Celica.  This allows the exhaust from the engine to exit more freely, which increases the engine's horsepower.  Our next step is to create a custom "Ram-Air" intake for the car using an intake manifold from a mid 90's Blazer.

Keeping the engine running cool is a big bonus for power as well.  At the 14-Hours of Charlotte, the Celica ran hot on the stock radiator, so we sourceda much bigger radiator from a 1990 Nissan Maxima.  At almost twice the thickness, four inches wider, and two inches taller, we're excited to get it in the car.  The next challenge is fitting it under the hood.  Our next step is to re-work our airbox and core support to fit in the new radiator and cut a hood scoop to evacuate the hot air from the hood.
